She has taught master classes at improv festivals and studios across the United States, Istanbul, and Iraqi Kurdistan. Mandy specializes in applying the Meisner Technique to long-form Improvisation and earned her Meisner teacher certification through the True Acting Institute. Nias started performing 12 years ago—to impress a guy she had a crush on who told her he was going to do an open mic in Fort Mill.

Stuart has been performing, writing, and teaching improv and sketch comedy since 1997. He completed the training programs of The Second City, Annoyance Theater, and Improv Olympic. In addition to performing with The Second City National Touring Company, and being a founding member of the internationally renowned music improv troupe Baby Wants Candy, Stuart has also performed in New York with the Magnet Theater and the People’s Improv Theater. As a faculty member of The Second City Training Center, he has taught improv from the beginning to conservatory levels, sketch writing, storytelling, music improv, and youth/teen courses.

Amy performs with That's What She Said and Bummerland as well as coach of The Jagbots. She is part of the level 4 long-form teaching team and loves being around students experiencing improv for the first time at CCT. When she's not performing comedy, she's an Education Program Manager working in entrepreneurship and innovation programs. During the class you will write, develop, and perform a three-to-five-minute set. You will learn the fundamentals of writing and performing standup comedy. We will examine various forms of jokes, writing techniques & practices, and performance basics.

CATCh — Comedy Arts Theater of Charlotte

The four semifinalists were chosen from 16 submissions that were submitted in early January. Submissions were received within North Carolina, yet extended to other states that included New York, Georgia, Illinois, Virginia, and Kentucky. A panel of readers were chosen to examine and score the submissions based on specific criteria formulated by the festival sponsors. The submitters with the top four scores were selected for the semi-finals.

CATCh opened its first permanent venue at 4200 South Blvd in Charlotte on February 8, 2019.[3] During COVID, the theater moved its location to a larger space in the same complex at 4128 South Blvd in Charlotte, where it continues to operate. In recent months, Charlotte comedy has jolted back to life, as if it’s been hit with defibrillator pads. At least one open mic show happens every night of the week. Venues include breweries, sandwich shops, cigar shops, even video rental stores—anywhere that would benefit from a crowd on a slow night.

Nias is sitting on a couch on the upper level of the Queen City Grounds coffee shop, where about 40 people have squeezed onto a narrow balcony on a Saturday night. “Nobody loves murder more than white women,” emcee Jordan Centry tells the crowd. He’s brought his own sound system but still has to compete with the noise of customers placing orders that wafts up from the lower level. Storytelling is a timeless tradition that transcends cultures, generations, and backgrounds. It has the power to captivate hearts, inspire change, and create connections like nothing else can. In this class, open to storytellers of all skill levels, we will guide you on a quest to discover and refine your own unique stories, and empower you to share them confidently before an eager audience.

Level 1 - improv basics and philosophies, stage presence, overcoming stage fright, achieving the group mind, co-creating, beginning skills/games, and building trust in an ensemble. Abby Head describes her experience as a woman as “short.” The co-founder of the Comedy Arts Theater of Charlotte transitioned in 2019, and she soon discovered the frustrations of moving through the world as a woman. Her full-time job is in tech, and after she changed her name, she sent a routine email to a client.

Virginia decides to take control of her life, starting with unlearning everything she was taught how a woman should be. Opting out of her marriage and facing losing the house she grew up in due to unpaid taxes are on the brighter side of things. Having reservations, she gives in to the idea of starting a Speakeasy.

“I put a whole set together and rehearsed it for eight straight days for hours a day,” she remembers. For comedians, open mic nights are the easiest way to hone their professional chops or try out new material. On a good night, an open mic is funny and unpredictable; on a bad night, the audience is just a bunch of bored comics waiting their turn. Get ready to LOL at our improv comedy show, where surprises and hilarity await at every turn! After the staged readings, the four judges (Hank West, Mack Staton, Corlis Hayes, and Vickie L. Evans) deliberated and scored the presentations based on specific criteria also formulated by the festival sponsors. The playwright/work with the highest score was chosen as the finalist.

One of the opening acts is Doc Love, born Diacos Love, who came up in the Chicago scene and spent two years on the road opening shows for the late Dick Gregory. The BIPOC Playwrights Festival was founded in 2020 through the efforts of the African American Playwrights Group and Matthews Playhouse Of The Performing Arts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in our theater communities. To align with The African American Playwrights Group’s mission of showcasing African American playwrights and its cultural in excellence, the BIPOC Playwrights Festival, for the third straight year, has done just that. The first year’s finalist, Greenwood, written By Coolidge Harris II, was a depiction of the 1821 destruction of Black Wall Street. The second year’s finalist, A House Is Not A Home, written by Kenyatt Godbolt, set in the 1990s in New York City, this original work showcased the family dynamics/conflicts between a father and a son with a backdrop of songs from the hip-hop culture.

And this year, Rory Sheriff’s Speakeasy will take the stage as the third finalist. This past Saturday (Memorial Day weekend), The African American Playwrights Group (AAPG) and Matthews Playhouse Of The Performing Arts sponsored the third BIPOC Playwrights Festival Semi-finals at Comedy Arts Theater Of Charlotte (CATCh). A special shout-out is given to the staff of CATCh that includes Abigail Head and Kevin Shimko, for being a venue sponsor for this event.
